Student Services

The goal of our student services program is to help minimize equity issues, encourage our students to use their power to dismantle oppressive systems, and envision a better future for themselves and the overall collective. We believe in the students' lived experiences regardless of age or grade level.

By envisioning age appropriate programming rooted in pedagogies that challenge oppressive systems and center community, we hope to collaboratively build better systems altogether.

We believe that the only requirement for educational advancement should be the desire to learn. However, we also recognize that not all hold this view, so our intention in all of our programming is that we hope to develop the tools necessary to succeed in our current system coupled with the views and philosophies to radically re-imagine a liberating future for all.

Undergraduate College Readiness and Support

Our college readiness program focuses on guiding students ready to apply to 4-year colleges. This process includes help with choosing a college, filling out applications, writing workshops for essays, and final review before submission.

In addition, we provide advice and support through the transition period and the first year of college (and beyond) to help ensure your success, both academically and mentally, during your academic career.

Writers' Workshops

We want students to see themselves in the materials and to have fun learning and developing their reading and writing skills through different arts. Students can explore identity, cultural backgrounds, and community through all of our lessons.

Institute on Community-Based Research

The Institute on Community-Based Research aims to truly center communities as necessary for social change. By engaging critically and collaboratively with the community, our goal is to disrupt power dynamics and push for humanizing practices through policy changes, institutional practices, and awareness.

This institute is an ongoing effort to have various community members conduct research, analyze the data, and then use that data to inform efforts for social change and community organizing.

Some examples of this can include using historical documents to inform current teaching practices, student voices to influence lessons, and community research to change local (or larger) policy.

There are two primary pathways in this institute: Community-Based Research and Youth Participatory Action Research.

Our Community-Based Research pathway focuses on how to engage critically with community, how to utilize research methods, and the necessity of truly listening, conducting research with, and analyzing data with community in order to not misinterpret and truly represent the needs and assets of the community through research for the purpose of change.

In the Youth Participatory Action Research (and Participatory Action Research overall to ensure community experiences are centered) pathway, students will be trained in research, data analysis, and community organizing. After completion of a project, students will receive a program certificate.
